How to turn off Chrome's Memory Saver for a game (and Edge's sleeping tabs)

What Memory Saver does to the game tab

Chrome and Edge free up the memory of tabs that go unused for a long time. In Chrome, the feature is called Memory Saver: the tab becomes inactive and stays in the tab strip, but its content is cleared from memory — when you click it, the page loads again. In Edge, the equivalent is sleeping tabs, which by default kick in after 2 hours without use.

For a regular website, great. For an idle game, it is the worst case: the hunt stops, the connection to the game drops and the page may come back on the login screen. That is why so many people wake up to find their account stopped since the middle of the night.

Chrome: take the game out of Memory Saver

  1. Open the ⋮ (More) menu at the top right and go to Settings › Performance. Shortcut: type chrome://settings/performance in the address bar.
  2. In the Memory Saver section, look for Always keep these sites active and click Add.
  3. Choose Add current sites (with the game open in a tab) or Add sites manually and type the game's address.

The same screen has the savings level: Moderate, Balanced (recommended) or Maximum. The stronger it is, the sooner idle tabs become inactive. That is also where you find Energy Saver, which, when on, limits what runs in the background — especially on a laptop that is unplugged.

Edge: take the game out of sleeping tabs

  1. Open the … (Settings and more) menu and go to Settings › System and performance.
  2. In the performance section, where the sleeping tabs settings are, add the game's site to the "Never put these sites to sleep" list (in newer versions, "Always keep these sites active").
  3. If you prefer, increase the time before an idle tab goes to sleep: it ranges from 30 seconds to 12 hours, and the default is 2 hours.

Is it worth turning off Memory Saver entirely?

No need. Exempting only the game's site keeps it from being discarded and lets the browser keep saving memory on the other tabs — which helps precisely when the PC stays on farming. Turning it all off only makes sense if you play on many different sites and do not want to build the list.

What this does not fix

Discarding is only one of the things the browser does to the tab you are not looking at. Even with the site on the list:

  • the hidden tab is still slowed down: a background tab or a minimized or covered window stops drawing, and its timers run at most once per second — in Chrome, after 5 minutes hidden and silent, about once per minute;
  • nobody alerts you when the game connection drops in the middle of the night;
  • a PC in sleep mode stops everything, list or no list.

Where IdleDeck comes in

In IdleDeck there is no Memory Saver or sleeping tabs for the game: each account runs in its own page that stays awake — drawing and with its timers at normal speed — with the window minimized, covered or in the tray. If the page goes down, it retries on its own; if the game connection drops, it alerts you (Windows notification, sound or Discord). And you do not have to change anything in the browser you use every day.

The cost is what you would expect: an awake account uses CPU and memory all the time. The app's Dashboard shows how much each account is using.

Common questions

Where is Chrome's Memory Saver?

Under Settings › Performance (or chrome://settings/performance in the address bar). That is where you find the Memory Saver toggle, the level (Moderate, Balanced or Maximum) and the "Always keep these sites active" list.

Why did the game tab reload by itself?

Almost always because it became inactive: Chrome's Memory Saver or Edge's sleeping tabs removed the page from memory, and it loads again when you come back. Adding the game's site to the list of sites that always stay active prevents this.

Does turning off Memory Saver slow down my PC?

If you exempt only the game's site, almost nothing changes: the other tabs still get the memory savings. Turning it all off makes the browser keep every tab in memory, which weighs on a computer with little RAM.

With the site on the list, does the game run minimized?

It is no longer discarded, but it is still treated as hidden: no drawing and limited timers. If the game only progresses with the page visible, it will still farm less while minimized.
